Sachin Tendulkar

If cricket is a religion, Sachin is the GOD of Indian cricket. Just saying Sachin in context of cricket is enough, this cricketer does not need introduction any further. This tailender brutal child from middle classs family, who started playing galli cricket in Sahitya sahvas society of Mumbai suburb Bandra, went on becoming the all time greatest cricketer of the world, making 1.2 billion Indians to believe that; any normal child can make it big in life by seeing a dream, chasing it with passion, discipline, never give-up attitude & lots of hardwork to make it happen.
After playing for 24 glorious years for India, this master blaster has taken emotional exit on Wankhede stadium, where he started playing his domestic cricket. Upon his retirement, Prime minister’s office has declared Bharatratna as a farewell gift to this greatest sportsman of the country.

Background:
Born to Ramesh (Professor & well known Marathi novelist) & Rajani Tendulkar (bank employee) on 24th April, 1974 in Mumbai.
Education: Switched schooling to Shardashram Vidyamandir, Dadar from New English school Bandra, as suggested by his cricket coach Mr. Ramakant Achrekar.
In the busy schedule of Cricket, Sachin could not manage to even pass HSC. But, he surely passed the test of life being a successful professional & good human being.

Turning point in life: As a young boy, Sachin was a brutal & naughty child full of energy & always busy bullying others & ending up fighting in school.  Elder brother Ajit noticed a spark in Sachin & to direct his raw energy & keep him engaged in cricket, he took Sachin to Ramakant Achrekar sir. He agreed to coach Sachin & adviced his father to shift him to Shardashram Vidyamandir, Dadar, which had a champion cricket team in Inter-school cricket circuit.
Upon changing a school & joining Ramakant Achrekar sir at Dadar, family took an important decision that; Sachin will stay with his Uncle at Dadar to avoid hectic travelling from Bandra to Shivaji park, Dadar.
Soon after joining Achrekar sir, Sachin started practicing under his guidance in the mornings & evenings. Moreover, Achrekar sir used to take him back on his scooter to play as many practice matches as possible happening around in Mumbai. He shortly became a child prodigy & talk of curiosity in the domestic cricketing circle. His school admitted him the leave of absence for playing in the cricket tournaments. He used to be 20% in the school & 80% on the cricket field.
By that time, his family was convinced to accept cricket as his full time profession. His brother Ajit reveals that; Sachin used to speak about cricket even in the sleep. He has sacrificed all his childhood on the field of cricket for the love of cricket with a dream to play for India & win the World cup, after getting inspired seeing Kapil Dev lifting World cup trophy in 1983.
Sunil Gavaskar & Vivian Richards are the role models of Sachin. He always wanted to be as focussed & concentrated as Gavaskar & at the same time as aggressive as Richards. He combined both these qualities successfully in his batting & Indian cricket team started playing to win & not only to draw the match. This is the most prominent contribution of Sachin (along with Ganguly, Dravid, Laxman & Kumble – Paach Pandav) in changing the psychology of Indian dressing room.
Spouse & children:
After cricket, he married secondly to Ms. Anjali Mehta (Paediatrician by profession & 6 years elder to Sachin) on 24th May’1995 & the couple is blessed with daughter Sara & son Arjun.

Anjali single handedly managed the responsibility of children & allowed Sachin to concentrate on his first love cricket.
Career:
1987-88 – After watching him playing Kapil Dev impressively in nets, Dilip Vengasarkar handpicked him in Mumbai team to play in Ranji trophy tournament, although he didn’t make it to playing eleven.
1988-89 – He made a debut in Ranji trophy, Deodhar trophy, Duleep trophy & Irani trophy scoring hundred in each opening match, being the first to do so & made selectors of Indian cricket team to think about his selection.
1989-2013 – He got selected in Indian cricket team at the age of mere 16 for Pakistan tour & this long journey of 24 years has ended in 2013, after spreading happiness & joy of watching him playing during all these years.
Records:
- Scored 50000+ runs in all forms of the cricket, out of which
- 30000+ are at international level
- 100 international centuries
- First 200 (double hundred) in ODI cricket
- part of World cup-2011 winning team, his long-lasted dream after seeing Kapil Dev lifting World-cup trophy back in 1983.
There is a long list of records to his credit which all his die-hard fans are aware of & which will remain unbroken for ever.
Role model: Apart from being a celebrity cricketer, Sachin has shown a strong character as a nice human being. He hardly caught into any controversy. He is always found calm, composed & stable minded during public appearances & positively responding to social initiatives. He always speaks about importance of family values & middle-class culture inherited from his parents. He is the real youth icon of the nation.
Second inning: After bringing laurels to country as a sportsman through the game of cricket, Sachin is most likely to contribute for the betterment of sport in India, being also the member of Rajyasabha. Hopefully, he will use this political platform in the interest of all other sports & not only cricket. He has huge (or largest to be precise) fan following; which is irrespective of any age, gender, religion, state etc. This all energy can be directed rightly for the betterment of nation, being a change maker himself. Well, he is mature enough to make sensible decision about second inning of his life. All the very best to Sachin ….. sorry Bharatratna Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.
